Gustav Mahler (Kaliště, 7 juli 1860 – Wenen, 18 mei 1911) was een in Bohemen geboren en opgegroeide Oostenrijkse componist en dirigent van joodse afkomst. Coming from a humble background Mahler began his musical education at the age of 15 and going on to study at the prestigious Vienna University, though he left before Gustav Mahler was born on the 7 July 1860 in Kaliste, Bohemia which was part of the Austrian Empire at the time and which is now part of the Czech Republic. Mahler's father was a tavern keeper and distiller in Kaliste, but when he was an infant, the family moved to Jihlava where Mahler was raised.
